Human Grade Pet Foods from The Honest Kitchen
The Honest Kitchen company founder, Lucy Postins, fell into her passion almost by accident. Back in 2002, she was preparing a homemade raw food diet for her dog, Mosi, but, as Postins explains, “it made a huge mess in my kitchen. I wanted to give him a whole foods diet, without all the mess and inconvenience.” At some point during that year, she began dehydrating Mosi’s food. “There was no lightning bolt moment when that thought occurred to me,” she recalls. “I’ve just always had an appreciation for a healthy, fresh homemade diet.” She realized that by taking out the moisture elements of the raw food diet, she could more easily and conveniently feed Mosi a whole foods diet. Turns out, others in her San Diego community liked her idea, too. Later that same year The Honest Kitchen, now a global company, was born.
Postins guarantees that all of the food in their products is human grade. “We not only choose 100 percent of our ingredients directly from the human food chain, but we also have our products made in a human food facility. Our bananas and cranberries are the same ones used by granola and trail-mix makers; our celery and carrots are also used in soups, and the place that makes our products creates bakery and soup mixes, milk shake powders and more,” she assures.
The fact that their pet foods are human grade doesn’t just mean an extra assurance of the quality and integrity, it has the added bonus that Postins and her team can taste test everything themselves. “When we’re securing our purchasing contracts each year, we receive lots of different ingredient samples from suppliers, and we sit down at our big kitchen table and taste them,” she shares. “We’re also checking for color, aroma and piece size, but the taste really is the best part.” Additionally, when creating new products or considering new ingredients, the dogs love to join in their taste-testing fun, to give their four paws of approval. “It’s a team effort, and we’re all focused on the same goal of creating meaningful products that make a difference, and of course, putting pets before profits,” she says.
If there is one key message that Postins would like all pet owners to know, it’s this, “Bring fresh ingredients into your pet’s diet on a daily basis,” she says. “You can do so much good for your pet just by doing this one thing.”
