Leo Walters has a passion for changing lives and creating community through bread. His artisan bakery, Glorious, opens this month in the historic Ladder building in Browne’s Addition.
“My social mission is to build community and serve people who need it most by not only creating the highest-quality artisan bread, but by also creating a replicable apprenticeship program,” explains Walters. “Working with our hands allows our soul to open up, and by learning the trade of crafting artisan bread, our program helps individuals who have suffered emotional or mental trauma learn a marketable skill while being immersed in an environment of love and care.”
Glorious bread utilizes simple ingredients, a longer fermentation time and is completely vegan. It is also baked slowly inside a Dutch oven and each loaf has a unique color and flavor profile. It is currently sold at Huckleberry’s on the South Hill, Madeleine’s, My Fresh Basket and Fery’s Catering.
“In addition to our artisan breads, we will also sell specialty spreads, gourmet olive oils and vinegars,” says Walters. “I want Glorious to feel like you’re walking into your grandmother’s kitchen. Everything will be available to sample, and we will have a community table where people can gather and break bread together.”
