The Many Benefits of Working with a Nurse Practitioner
Nurse Practitioners of Idaho (NPI) is a nonprofit, independent membership group that is dedicated to the continuing education of nurse practitioners, as well as educating communities on the many benefits of choosing a nurse practitioner for their primary health care needs.
“One of the main benefits of working with a nurse practitioner (NP) is the individualized care the patient receives,” says Michelle Anderson, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, FAANP, current vice president of NPI. “The patient knows that their specific needs and issues are being addressed with treatment and care options adjusted to their unique circumstances. They also have the opportunity to build a relationship with their NP that allows for a strong healthcare partnership.”
Anderson goes on to explain that nurse practitioners are licensed, independent practitioners who practice in multiple settings as primary and/or specialty care providers and can diagnose, treat and manage acute episodic and chronic illnesses. “NPs are experts in health promotion and disease prevention,” she says. “They order, conduct, supervise and interpret diagnostic and laboratory tests; prescribe pharmacological agents and non-pharmacologic therapies; and teach and counsel patients, among other services.”
A nurse practitioner’s chief aim is to address the needs of the whole patient, taking time to focus not only on the diagnosis but also educating the patient on the diagnosis. “We partner with patients in their care, addressing all their healthcare needs, be it physical, social or psychological,” affirms Anderson.
