Children and Essential Micronutrients

Even in health-conscious families, busy lifestyles may lead to children not getting the essential micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) they need. Nutritional deficiencies can be serious in children because the nutritional requirements of children are higher in proportion to body weight when compared to adults. Inadequate nutrient intake can lead to impaired growth and development.

Although it is generally advised that micronutrients come from a food source, many children do not get the daily intake recommendations for nutrients such as vitamins A, C, D, and E and minerals, calcium and magnesium. For this reason, the Linus Pauling Institute, at Oregon State University, recommends children ages 4 to 13 years take a daily multiple vitamin/mineral with these micronutrients.
